There are four big things that all computers must do:
-
Take in input (like a keyboard or touchscreen).
-
Remember information (like names or numbers).
-
Follow instructions (step-by-step).
-
Give output (like showing something on the screen).
If something does all four, it’s a computer!
Think about a simple calculator.
You press buttons (input), it stores your numbers (memory), it knows what to do (instructions), and it shows the answer (output). That’s a computer!
Now think about a blender. It spins. That’s all. It doesn’t store, decide, or follow any instructions. That’s not a computer.
Even video game consoles, smartwatches, and traffic lights have computers inside. They take in signals, remember data, and follow rules.
So it’s not about how the computer looks. It’s about what it does.
If it listens, remembers, follows instructions, and gives results — it’s a computer.
