Life Is a Game of Survival
Letās imagine a game.
In this game, everyone is trying to stay in ā forever.
But thereās one rule:
You only stay in the game⦠if you get copied.
Thatās what genes do.
They donāt eat.
They donāt sleep.
They donāt think.
But the ones that get copied more often… are the ones that stick around.
Ā
š A Quick Reminder: Whatās a Gene Again?
-
A gene is a tiny instruction, written in DNA
-
It tells cells how to make proteins
-
Proteins build everything ā your muscles, eyes, brain, even your feelings
-
Genes live inside the DNA of every cell
Now hereās the crazy part:
Youāre made of genes, but theyāre not ātryingā to help you.
Theyāre just doing what keeps themselves going.
Ā
š§ But Genes Canāt Think⦠Right?
Thatās right. Genes donāt have brains.
They donāt say, āHmm, how do I survive today?ā
But over millions of years, something weird happens:
-
Genes that help the body live and reproduce get copied
-
Genes that hurt or do nothing get left behind
So, it looks like genes want to survive ā even if they donāt know it.
They are like players in a race:
-
The ones that help the body win⦠get copied
-
The ones that donāt⦠disappear
Ā
𧬠The Gene Game
Letās say there are 2 genes:
-
Gene A makes strong muscles
-
Gene B makes weak muscles
If strong muscles help you survive and have babies, then:
ā
Gene A gets copied
ā Gene B slowly disappears
Thatās natural selection ā the body stays alive, but the gene is what really wins.
Genes that copy better ā stay longer ā become more common.
Ā
š¶ Genes Donāt Care About One Person
Hereās something strange:
If a gene helps you, thatās great ā but only if it helps you:
š Stay alive
š Have children
š Pass on that gene
If the gene helps you stay alive but never get copied, itās out of the game.
So genes ācareā about being passed on, not just keeping you healthy.
Even helping others only matters if it helps copies of the same gene survive.
Ā
š¤ Genes as Survival Robots
You can think of every living body ā a bird, a whale, a human ā like a:
Robot made by genes
The robotās job is to:
-
Protect the genes inside
-
Move around and find food
-
Grow up and have babies
-
Then pass those genes to the next robot
Your body is the robot. The genes are the real players.
Ā
š” Big Idea
Life looks like itās all about the bodyā¦
But deep down, itās about which genes survive and get copied the most.
Itās not magic. Itās just survival math.
Ā
š§ Recap
ā
Genes donāt think ā but they act like they āwantā to be copied
ā
Genes that help bodies survive and have babies get passed on
ā
Genes that donāt get copied⦠slowly vanish
ā
You are a robot built by your genes to help them survive
ā
Natural selection is the competition of genes
