What Are Genes? And How They Build Every Living Thing

🧠 Are Genes Alive?

Let’s stop and ask something strange.

Your genes:

  • Make your body

  • Keep you alive

  • Help make babies

  • Copy themselves again and again

But… are they alive?

Not really.

A gene is just a piece of DNA — a set of chemical letters (A, T, C, G).
It doesn’t eat, sleep, breathe, or think.
It doesn’t feel happy when it survives or sad when it doesn’t.

But here’s the weird part:

Genes act like they want to survive.

 

👟 But How Can Something That Can’t Think “Want” Anything?

Good question.

Let’s say you throw a ball, and it bounces.

Does the ball want to bounce? No. It’s just following the rules of physics.

Same with genes.

Genes that were good at staying copied got passed on.
Genes that weren’t — didn’t.

Over millions of years, only the survivors stuck around.
Now, those survivors act like they have one goal:

“Stay copied. Stay alive.”

Even if they don’t know they’re doing it.

 

🧬 The Illusion of Want

Here’s how it works:

Let’s say there are two genes.

  • Gene A helps a bird find food faster

  • Gene B doesn’t do anything

Birds with Gene A eat more, grow stronger, and have more babies.

Which gene gets copied more?

👉 Gene A.

So it seems like Gene A “wanted” to help the bird — but it didn’t plan anything.

It just happened to be useful.

 

🧠 The Trick of Nature: Selection Without Thought

Nature is full of things that work — not because they were planned — but because they lasted.

Think of it like a giant contest:

  • Genes that helped a body grow, survive, and make more babies got passed on

  • Genes that didn’t… vanished

No one ran the contest.
There were no judges.
No scoreboard.

But over time, this “survival game” made sure the most useful genes stayed.

It’s called natural selection — survival without thinking.

 

🚀 Genes Compete Without Knowing It

Now let’s get even cooler.

Inside every body, genes are competing.
They’re not fighting with swords — but they are trying to stay copied more than other genes.

This competition leads to wild things:

  • Some genes tell your body to grow big muscles

  • Others tell it to store more fat

  • Some tell your brain to love babies

  • Others make animals protect their family, or even help strangers

Why?

Because all those things help the genes survive inside bodies that do well in the world.

 

🔁 They Copy Themselves… Again and Again

Every time a cell copies, every time a baby is made, the genes inside get copied too.

The more often a gene gets copied, the more “successful” it becomes.

Even if the gene:

  • Doesn’t care

  • Doesn’t plan

  • Doesn’t understand

That’s why it looks like genes are smart — but really, they just lasted the longest.

 

🧪 Even Kindness Can Be Selfish (for Genes)

Let’s say a bee stings a bear to protect the hive.
The bee dies. That’s sad, right?

But the bee’s family — her sisters and cousins — survive. And they all carry her same genes.

So her act of bravery helps her genes stay alive — even if she doesn’t.

To the outside world, it looks like kindness.

To her genes, it’s a winning move.

 

💬 So Are We Just Robots?

Nope!

Even if your genes shaped your body, your brain, your feelings —
you can still think, wonder, create, and choose.

You’re not stuck following only what your genes “want.”
You can:

  • Help strangers

  • Love deeply

  • Change your world

  • Even choose not to have children — and still live a full life

But it’s cool to know:

Many of the things we do feel right because they once helped genes stay alive.
