What Are Genes? And How They Build Every Living Thing

🔁 A Quick Look Back

Let’s remember some important things you’ve learned:

Genes:

  • Tiny pieces of DNA inside every cell

  • Give instructions to make proteins

  • Proteins help build your body

  • Passed on when a baby is made

  • Don’t think — but act like they “want” to be copied

  • Can shape how you look, feel, and act

Memes:

  • Ideas that live in your brain (like jokes, beliefs, habits)

  • Can spread from person to person

  • Don’t think either — but some are better at copying than others

  • Can be good or bad

  • You can choose which ones to keep

So here’s the BIG question:

What do you do with all this?

👦👧 You Are the Story Genes and Memes Are Telling

Every living thing is part of a huge, amazing story.
This story started billions of years ago when life began.
Genes were there from the very beginning.

Now you’re here.
And inside your cells are billions of letters of DNA, passed down from parents, and their parents, and so on — all the way back.

Inside your brain are countless memes, passed down from teachers, friends, books, songs, and your own thoughts.

You are a walking, thinking story made of genes and memes.

But you’re also the author who gets to write what happens next.

🧠 You Have Power That Genes and Memes Don’t

Genes can’t decide anything.
Memes can’t change themselves.
But you can:

  • Choose new beliefs

  • Learn new things

  • Change old habits

  • Teach better ideas to others

  • Use science to help your body stay healthy

  • Use kindness to help people grow strong

That’s superpower-level stuff.

🤝 Why Understanding Genes Can Help Us Be Kinder

Sometimes people think:

“That person is bad!”
Or
“That group is different — I don’t like them.”

But when we understand genes, we realize:

  • Everyone shares mostly the same genes

  • We all came from the same tree of life

  • Differences like skin color or eye shape are tiny

  • Inside, we are so much alike

And when we understand memes, we realize:

  • Some people believe things because that’s what they were taught

  • Some memes help us connect, others divide us

  • We don’t have to hate — we can understand

That knowledge makes it easier to care about others.

🚀 What Does “Rising Above” Really Mean?

It means:

  • You understand your genes and memes

  • You respect them, but don’t obey blindly

  • You ask questions

  • You pick what helps, and leave what hurts

  • You try to become the best version of yourself

Rising above means becoming more human — not just a body or brain, but a heart, a mind, and a choice.

🪞 You Are Not a Puppet — You Are a Mirror and a Flame

You reflect:

  • The genes of your ancestors

  • The ideas of your family and world

But you also shine:

  • You think new thoughts

  • You feel new feelings

  • You make new choices

  • You can light the way for others

That’s not something a puppet can do.
That’s something only you can do.

🌍 What Happens If More People Think This Way?

The world becomes:

  • Kinder — because we understand where feelings come from

  • Smarter — because we spread good ideas, not bad ones

  • Stronger — because we don’t let selfish genes or dangerous memes win

  • Fairer — because we see how much we all share inside

It all starts with learning.
It all starts with asking.
It all starts with people like you.

🧠 Some Final Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Which ideas do I believe — and why?

  • Which feelings do I follow — and should I?

  • What kind of person do I want to be?

  • How can I help others rise above too?

You don’t need to know all the answers yet.
Even grown-ups don’t.
But asking is the first step.

🌱 A Seed That Keeps Growing

This course was a seed.
You planted it in your brain.

And just like a gene…
And just like a meme…
It will grow when you:

  • Think about it

  • Share it

  • Use it to make smart, kind choices

That’s how real learning works.
That’s how change begins.
