Why can one half also be two quarters?

Cutting a portion into smaller pieces changes how we count it. It does not change how much we have.

Keep the shaded amount unchanged

The shaded region starts as one half of the same whole bar.

Meaning1/2 of the bar
Read all steps
  1. Cut each half in two

Every half becomes two quarters. The whole has four pieces and our portion has two, so 1/2 = 2/4.

    Meaning: 1/2 = 2/4

  2. Cut each quarter in two

There are now eight equal pieces in the whole. Our portion covers four of them, so 2/4 = 4/8.

    Meaning: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8

See it. Try it. Make it yours.

  1. Make sense of every piece

  2. Use all four fraction operations

  3. Move between fractions and decimals
